Did you know that the oldest living veteran of World War II lives in Austin?

Richard Arvine Overton recently celebrated his 109th birthday. Overton, who was born in Bastrop County on May 11th, 1906, bought his Austin home for $,4,000 in 1945 after he served with the army in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945, including stints in Guam, Hawaii, Palau and Iwo Jima among others. In 2013 Overton was invited to the White House to be recognized by the President. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, 90 year old Earlene Love-Karo

Now, when he’s not in the media spotlight around Memorial Day, he enjoys a much quieter life with Earlene, cigars, and whiskey in his morning coffee.
